There is no hotter job sector in today’s job climate than green jobs. Many of these good-paying careers are accessible with very little training. However, where you get training and who teaches the classes can have a significant difference in your future success. Here are questions to ask a school or organization before you enroll in an Energy Audit course to make sure that your money is well spent: Are you a BPI (Building Performance Institute) affiliate?. Do you provide the students with $1000’s of equipment to use in hands-on training? Many Energy Audit schools don’t have their own equipment which is essential to pass the hands-on nature of your exam. Is your curriculum designed especially for the climate that I will be working in? Consider the climate that you plan to do your work in and think about how that can effect your job.

What classroom materials do you use? Do you have a physical office that I can come and visit? Many schools don’t have a permanent location and aren’t well established. Can I review the course for free? Is the school transparent about what you will be learning and methods used. Do your instructors offer tutoring? Can I register for my course over the phone? Can I register for my course in person? How flexible is the registration process? Do you have dedicated education counselors that I can call or speak to in-person with questions? You want to know that your school has a support system in place to aid you with questions. Can I take a tour of the facilities that I will be training in? Again, transparency in the type of learning experience you will have is important. Is all of my training, testing, and equipment use included in one price?

Be sure that all costs and fees are included in the price quoted. Who are your instructors and how much training have they done? Are the instructors experienced not just in the material, but also experienced in imparting that information on to others. Is the owner BPI certified and have extensive knowledge of construction and home sales? You want to know that you are learning from a team that is knowledgeable from the top down. Do you provide live courses? Everyone learns in a different way and live courses provide a positive, interactive classroom environment. ?
